Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. The country’s capital and largest city is Kiev. The official and national language is Ukrainian. Ukraine regained its independence on August 24, 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Since its independence, Ukraine has been governed as a unitary republic under a semi-presidential system. Population: 47 732 079.

Diplomatic relations with Ukraine were established on 13.01.1993. The political relations between the two countries are considered very good and friendly, with common interest for further development.

Since the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia, Albania maintained a clear and steadfast position in defense of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, in line with the position of the EU and the USA. Albania has joined from start the decision of the European Union to impose sanctions on the Russian Federation. With Russia’s aggression of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Albania immediately condemned Russia’s attacks, applied the sanctions imposed by the European Union, and as Ukraine’s co-sponsor in the UN Security Council, was in the foreground alongside the countries partners, such as the USA, Great Britain, France, etc., in condemning the violation of international law by a permanent member of the SC (Russia) by attacking and not recognizing the sovereignty of Ukraine as an independent state. Albania has also voted for the suspension of Russia from the Council of Europe, AP and Council of Europe, UNHRC, etc., until the Russian invasion of Ukraine stops and the Russian army leaves Ukraine. The Parliament of Albania has approved the Resolution on “Supporting the Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity of Ukraine and the Protection of the Principles of International Law and European Security”.

Albania considers the war of resistance from Ukraine as a war for democracy, for European values, European security and for maintaining an international order based on rules, and has expressed Albania’s readiness to continue supporting Ukraine with everything it can: with political, diplomatic and economic means, as well as the willingness to join efforts to rebuild Ukraine, as soon as possible, in cooperation with neighboring countries. The Albanian government expresses its full support for the 10-Point Peace Plan, as the only realistic way to restore a just and long-term peace in Ukraine, and remains an active supporter of all initiatives taken for full accountability for the serious crimes committed in Ukraine and the investigation of all violations and abuses of human rights.

Albania has officially expressed its willingness to Ukraine to be part of the working group of countries that contribute to point 5 of the Peace Plan: Implementation of the UN Charter and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and world order.

The successful summit held in Tirana on February 28, 2024, confirmed Albania’s commitment and special role in supporting Ukraine.
