Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs

Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners. With 173 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people.

The International Organization for Migration has been operationally present in Albania since 1992, while Albania became an IOM member state in 1993. IOM actively contributes to the implementation of the GoA – UN Programme of Cooperation for Sustainable Development 2017-2021 and supported the development of the National Strategy on Migration Governance 2019-2022, in line with “Migration Governance Framework”. IOM allocated to Albania in the project entitled “Strengthening institutional capacity in the governance of migration in Albania” a fund of 100,000 USD, for a period of 2 years 2020-2021. The project funded by IOM Fund for Development of Administration would be implemented from the IOM Office in Tirana. Albania submitted to the IOM Secretariat in November 2020 the “National Voluntary Report on the status and implementation of GCM for 2019-2020”.

The institution responsible for cooperation with the organization is the Ministry of Interior.
