New York – May 12, 2022  |The Security Council held its meeting on the situation in Ukraine, focusing on the protection of children.

In the face of the devastating consequences of the war in Ukraine, child protection, humanitarian efforts and evacuations of trapped civilians must continue to increase, UN officials underlined during the Security Council meeting.< /p>

Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Mr. Omar Abdi highlighted the heavy impact of war on education, he said that schools are a means of salvation for children in conflict, and children’s protection and access to education is needed.

Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Coordinator of Emergency Aid, Mrs. Joyce Msuya, reported on efforts to negotiate more humanitarian pauses for the safe passage of civilians trapped by the fighting in Ukraine. She emphasized the need to urgently increase all efforts and the need for humanitarian financial support to help civilians and especially children in need.

Ambassador Ferit Hoxha in his speech emphasized that with the intensification of the war, the scale of human suffering has also increased. He condemned the massive destruction of educational and health facilities as well as civil infrastructure.Preliminary reports and facts raise serious concerns about serious violations of international humanitarian law.

He called on the Secretary-General and the Special Representative to add Ukraine as “a situation of concern” in the 2022 annual report on children in armed conflict.Ambassador Hoxha emphasized the necessity of conducting investigations and ensuring accountability.
