Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs

The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the main intergovernmental body within the United Nations system. It is responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide, by addressing specific country situations and making recommendations to them. The HRC was established by UN General Assembly resolution 60/251 in 2006, becoming a key United Nations body for addressing human rights issues. It consists of 47 UN member states, which are elected by the UN General Assembly for a three-year term.

Albania, as a NATO member country and EU candidate, strongly supports the respect of human rights and their universality. Based on these achievements, and the need for the credibility of this body so important for human rights, Albania has become a member of the Human Rights Council, for the period 2024-2026, in the elections that took place in the UN General Assembly, in October 2023.

Albania was a member of the HRC for the first time in the period 2015-2017, during which it contributed to global commitments on issues such as the rights of national minorities, intolerance and discrimination, and actively promoted gender equality, women’s empowerment and the rights of groups at risk due to discrimination.
