Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ferit Hoxha, has reacted on the X platform by condemning the statement of a member of the Government of Serbia regarding ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, describing it as unacceptable and offensive to the victims of the war. He emphasized that the normalization of crimes against humanity undermines reconciliation and that the European future of the region can only be built on truth, responsibility, and respect for the victims.

Full reaction by the Minister:

The statement of a member of the Government of Serbia, who publicly expressed regret that ethnic cleansing in Kosovo was not carried out on an even larger scale, is unacceptable, shocking, and a grave insult to the victims of the war.

The relativization and normalization of one of the most serious crimes against humanity, crimes condemned by history, international justice, and the very conscience of humanity, contradict the values upon which today’s Europe has been built. They undermine efforts for reconciliation and cooperation, fuel mistrust and hatred, and reopen wounds that have still not healed.

No one can build trust by bringing back the darkest shadows of the past, especially by glorifying policies and figures that bear responsibility for tragedies, suffering, and crimes that have left deep marks on the history of our region, such as the “Butcher of the Balkans.”

The process of normalization and reconciliation, for which Kosovo, Serbia, and our entire region have such a great need, requires above all responsibility, reflection, and the courage to confront the past.

It can never be built on statements that justify or glorify the policies that brought so much pain and destruction, but only on truth, respect for the victims, and a sincere commitment to a shared European future.
